Marine Geoscience Company Expands

Friday, July 11, 2008

A successful marine and geoscience business headquartered in Port Hawkesbury is expanding.

Premier Rodney MacDonald announced the growth of McGregor Geoscience Limited and Superport Marine Services Limited today, July 10, during Superport Days, an annual seminar and networking event to discuss the Strait-area Superport. McGregor Geoscience Limited and Superport Marine Services Limited have the same owner and are run as complementary businesses.

The province, through Nova Scotia Business Inc. (NSBI), is supporting the growth with a payroll rebate up to a maximum of $1,433,750. The rebate is earned as the employer reaches performance targets within the next five years. McGregor and Superport Marine are expected to create up to 75 new jobs.

"Successful companies like McGregor Geoscience and Superport Marine Services are shaping Nova Scotia's economy now, and will continue to do so in the future," said Premier MacDonald.

"Through NSBI, we are supporting a business that competes and applies its expertise to bring home new opportunities in offshore research and marine business," said Economic Development Minister Angus MacIsaac.

McGregor Geoscience provides mapping and surveying services in industries including defence, oil and gas, telecommunications, transportation, and mining. Superport Marine Services Limited operates a fleet of vessels and provides a wide range of marine services. While the majority of work is conducted in Port Hawkesbury, the employer also has an office in Halifax used for marine science data.

"All over the world, you'll find demand for our products and services," said Les McIntyre, president of McGregor Geoscience. "With this expansion, we can continue to advance and tap into new and emerging markets while developing strong relationships with key partners here in Nova Scotia."

"NSBI is proud to work with a company that already has strong roots in our communities, and has carved a niche in a truly global business," said Pat Ryan, vice-president and chief operating officer of NSBI.

Nova Scotia Business Inc. is Nova Scotia's private-sector-led business development agency. NSBI is the investment attraction arm of the province and helps businesses in Nova Scotia meet growth potential through advisory services, trade development, financing and venture capital.
