Life Sciences Outsourcing Firm Chooses Nova Scotia

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Nova Scotia is the first Canadian location for a Boston-based Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) company that serves life sciences businesses. ForeignExchange Translations, Inc. provides translation services to medical device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies. The company plans to hire up to 60 people in Halifax over the next three years, and its presence adds an important piece of infrastructure to Nova Scotia’s growing life sciences sector.

“The cost advantages of doing business in Nova Scotia and its proximity to New England made our decision to come to Nova Scotia an easy one,” said Andres Heuberger, president of ForeignExchange Translations, Inc. “Our company offers a winning service to companies that need marketing materials translated into various languages, helping them to sell their products around the world.”

ForeignExchange Translations has offices around the world to service its growing list of U.S. and international clients. Its Halifax location will provide expertise in project management, graphic design, and publishing of materials. Language experts, hired through contracts, will translate the materials.

“The arrival of ForeignExchange Translations to Nova Scotia is a result of the Province’s business-attraction efforts in New England,” said Economic Development Minister Ernest Fage. “Having specialized scientific translation services here at home supports our growing life sciences sector and expedites the export of their products internationally.”

Nova Scotia Business Inc. has agreed to a three-year payroll rebate with ForeignExchange Translations, Inc. that could see the company hire up to 60 people over the course of the agreement, at an average salary of $34,000 per year. If the company meets obligations in the deal, ForeignExchange Translations is eligible to receive a maximum of $397,000 by the end of the three years.

“ForeignExchange Translations is not only bringing its own jobs to Nova Scotia, it will also help us in our efforts to attract other businesses,” said Stephen Lund, president and CEO of Nova Scotia Business Inc. “In choosing Nova Scotia, the Boston-based company gives the province added credibility as a place to do business when we target other companies in the life sciences sector, specifically when the targeted company is a client of ForeignExchange Translations.”

“ForeignExchange Translations is a welcome addition to Nova Scotia’s growing life sciences sector,” said Marli MacNeil, CEO of BioNova, the province’s life sciences industry association. “Complementing our successful companies, research capabilities and top-notch educational institutions, ForeignExchange Translations is an important new service for life sciences enterprises that rely on international markets.”

Nova Scotia Business Inc. is the province’s business-development agency, an organization that works with companies to deliver business solutions. The private sector-led organization works to attract new businesses to the province and helps those already in Nova Scotia expand, through services such as export development and financing.
